Before ordering a heat pump for a hotel or commercial swimming pool in the UAE or Saudi Arabia, resolve one practical question: will pool water pass through the heat pump, or will a separate heat exchanger connect the pool to an independent equipment circuit?

The answer affects the quotation, pipework, pumps and controls. A bypass branch and a separate water circuit serve different purposes. Define the arrangement with the equipment supplier and project engineer before approving the purchase.

1. Understand the two arrangements

In a direct pool-water connection, filtered pool water passes through the heat pump's water-side exchanger and returns to the pool. The unit's wetted components must be approved for that water.

In an indirect connection, the heat pump circulates a separate water circuit through an external heat exchanger. Pool water passes through the other side. During normal operation, energy transfers across the exchanger surface while the two fluids remain separate.

Decision point

Direct pool-water connection

Separate equipment circuit with external exchanger

Water reaching the heat pump

Treated pool water

Separately specified circuit water or approved fluid

Compatibility to confirm

All pool-water wetted components in the unit

Heat pump circuit requirements and external exchanger's pool-water side

Flow review

Flow through each heat pump branch

Flow and pressure drop on both exchanger circuits

Thermal review

Unit duty at the required water conditions

Unit duty and exchanger transfer at the same project design point

Scope to price

Unit connections and agreed circulation equipment

External exchanger, circuit equipment and coordinated controls

Neither arrangement is automatically suitable because the project is in a particular country. Choose it against the actual equipment requirements and site design.

2. A bypass does not isolate the water

A bypass sends part of the circulation flow around the equipment. The branch through the heat pump still contains pool water.

This distinction matters when reviewing quotations. Adding a bypass cannot make incompatible wetted materials suitable for salt or chemically treated water. A separate heat exchanger provides a physical boundary between circuits; its pool-water side still needs appropriate materials and operating limits.

Mark both the water type and flow direction on the proposed schematic. If hydraulic separation is required, the drawing should show an external exchanger with two distinct circuits rather than just a bypass pipe.

3. Confirm compatibility for the exact supplied model

Give the supplier the water-treatment method, measured salinity or chloride information where applicable, and a representative water analysis. Request the permitted chemistry range for the exact model, including relevant pH, disinfectant and hardness limits.

Ask which materials contact the water, including the exchanger, connections and seals. A corrosion-resistant cabinet says little about internal water compatibility. Likewise, a material description alone does not confirm every permissible chemical concentration.

For salt-chlorinated pools, obtain explicit confirmation for the intended water conditions. Do not copy another manufacturer's chemistry limits into a ZHIEN specification. If compatibility remains unconfirmed, keep the connection arrangement provisional and request an engineering review.

4. Review flow through the equipment branch

Total filtration flow is not necessarily the flow through the heat pump. Request the selected unit's required flow range, pressure-drop information and applicable working-pressure limit.

Have the engineer review available pump head with the proposed pipework, filter, valves and equipment. For a multi-unit bank, identify how branch flows will be balanced and verified. Equal division between units should be demonstrated by the design and commissioning records rather than assumed.

Also document the intended pump operating modes. If filtration uses variable speed, confirm which modes can support heat pump operation. Agree how the controls respond when the required circulation is unavailable.

For an indirect arrangement, perform this review on both circuits. A suitable flow on the pool side does not establish the correct flow through the heat pump.

5. Select the external exchanger at the actual duty

If the design uses a separate exchanger, request a selection showing:

  • Required transferred heating or cooling duty.

  • Entering and leaving temperatures on both sides.

  • Design flow and calculated pressure drop on both sides.

  • Fluid type and any proposed additive.

  • Wetted materials, pressure limits and cleaning access.

An exchanger's headline capacity depends on its stated selection conditions. A rating based on a large temperature difference cannot simply be carried over to a project with closer circuit temperatures.

In heating service, the equipment circuit must provide the temperature difference needed to transfer heat into the pool. In cooling service, it must be cold enough to absorb heat from the pool. Ask the engineer to confirm the resulting heat pump operating temperatures and the exchanger selection together.

For ZHIEN pool units, order a heating configuration or a cooling configuration. One unit does not include both functions. A heating capacity rating does not establish cooling capacity, whether the connection is direct or indirect.

6. Coordinate filtration, dosing and controls

Show the filter, heat pump or external exchanger, chemical dosing points and return connection on one coordinated drawing.

Equipment manuals may specify dosing downstream of the exchanger and measures to prevent concentrated chemicals flowing back when circulation stops. Follow the selected equipment's instructions and the project engineer's approved arrangement.

Agree sensor locations, pump enable signals, required flow protection and the response to loss of circulation. With two circuits, clarify how operation depends on circulation being available on both sides.

Provide access for isolation, inspection and maintenance in the approved design. Identify who supplies each pump, valve, sensor and control interface so these items do not become gaps between the pool contractor and MEP supplier.

Discuss your pool-water circuit with ZHIEN

For a UAE or Saudi project, send a proposed hydraulic schematic, water analysis, treatment method, required heating or cooling function, design temperatures, available branch flow, electrical supply and installation location. For a retrofit, include equipment schedules and photographs of the existing plant.

Ask for a model-specific response confirming water compatibility, hydraulic requirements, the proposed connection arrangement and included equipment.

Explore ZHIEN's swimming pool heat pump range and the ZY-22/SN4-DP product listing. A listed model is a starting point for enquiry; its suitability for your water circuit needs confirmation.

For a project reference, view the Dubai large commercial swimming pool project: 24 ZDC180 units, delivered on 9 July 2020. The published facts do not identify whether that installation used direct pool-water circulation or a separate exchanger.
